[FLASH] Anthropic passes OpenAI on quarterly revenue for the first time and books an operating profit
Anthropic reported second-quarter revenue of $11.6bn against $4.73bn in Q1, with a small adjusted operating profit of $559m attributed to more efficient use of compute; OpenAI reported $6.7bn (up 18% from $5.7bn) with its operating loss widening from $9.3bn to $12.3bn. It is the first quarter in which Anthropic has out-earned OpenAI, and it separates the two leading labs on unit economics rather than on scale. Note the measurement: $11.6bn is a quarterly actual, not the ~$65bn forward run-rate figure carried on this band on 08-17, and the two should not be netted against each other.
