[DEVELOPING] Study: paid ChatGPT ad visits earn 64% less revenue per session than paid Google Search visits

A working paper by Maximilian Kaiser (WU Vienna) and Christian Schulze (Frankfurt School), not yet peer-reviewed, covers about 1,898 online shops. It finds that US paid ChatGPT ad visits generated $0.89 per session versus $2.45 for paid Google Search visits, with conversion of 0.37% versus 1.17%. The authors estimate ad revenue of about $1 per free user per year against about $5 of inference cost, and observe 6–8% fewer organic ChatGPT referrals after ads launched. PPC Land discloses that Kaiser is scientific adviser to Grips Intelligence, the data provider; still to watch is any response from OpenAI or advertisers.
