[FLASH] SoftBank launches $11B+ junk-bond sale to fund OpenAI stake as IPO delay strains its financing
SoftBank launched more than $10B (reported target above $11B) of dollar- and euro-denominated senior unsecured notes on Monday to help fund its ~$65B OpenAI commitment, one of the largest single-name junk-bond sales tied to an AI bet. The raise follows Altman's Sept 12 word that OpenAI will not list this year, which derailed SoftBank's plan to borrow against a listed stake; S&P has moved SoftBank's outlook to negative and its net LTV could breach its 25% ceiling. For the tape it is a credit signal, not an equity one: OpenAI is not investable directly, so the exposure lands in SoftBank's Tokyo/US shares and, downstream, in Nvidia's order book -- while an $18B Oracle-linked data-center loan trading at ~$0.89-0.91 shows AI credit risk repricing as the 10-year pushed above 5%.
